The church has a long history from 1862 A D, as it was a parish church.
The church was originally built by Fr. Joseph Bardou MEP, who later became Bishop of Coimbatore.
When Fr. Bardou was parish priest of Palakkad between 1860 and 1865, he built the church and urged Msgr. Ajoty, the then Delegate Apostolic in India, to erect a new Diocese of Sultanpet, accordingly submitted the request to Vatican in 1880 A D.
The church was renovated and dedicated on 24.Aug.2002 by HE.The Most Rev.Dr.M.Ambrose,Bishop of Coimbatore.
The church was raised as Cathedral Church of newly declared Sultanpet Diocese on 28.Dec.2013.
