The history of church begins way back from AD 52 as it is believed that St.Thomas reached Azhikode nearby.
Even though it has a long history, the church history took a reliable shape when St.Francis Xavier visited the place in AD 1542,1544 and in 1548.
In 1802, some missionaries from Spain who miraculously escaped from a shipwreck on their way to India, renovated the church.
A new church was built in 1890 and was established as a parish by Arch Diocese of Verapoly.
A wooden statue of Arch Angel St.Michael was erected here.
The church was raised as Cathedral of newly declared Kottapuram diocese on JULY 3,1987.
The current structure was completed and blessed by Most. Rev. Dr. Daniel Acharuparambil.
