This church was established by St. Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ.
Apostle Thomas came to india in AD 52 and taught of Jesus in various places in Kerala and Tamilnadu. He died at Mylappur near Chennai.
During his stay in Kerala he visited Palayur and preached in this place. Many people became followers of Jesus Christ. He established a church at Palayur.
In that time it was possible to travel to sea from Palayur thorugh Canals by boats. St. Thomas came to this place in boat, and the pond he landed is known as Taliyakulam.
