The present Latin Church in India has its origin from the missionary work of western missionaries. In 1534, the diocese of Goa was established. St. Francis Xavier, Robert De Nobili and Constant Lievens were a few dominant missionaries. In 1886, the Indian Latin hierarchy was established.
Total Christian population in India is around 2.8 Crores. Out of this, 1.4 Crores belong to Latin hierarchy. In Kerala alone, the strength of Latin Catholic population is 20 lakhs.
